Postmature When Babies Born Too Late - Postmature is the opposite of premature babies when the newborn is called post maturity after more than 42 weeks in the womb. The incidence of post maturity birth is much more common than premature, about 7% of babies born post maturity, despite the fact that maybe not all of them actually post maturity. Some babies who allegedly postmature actually due to errors in calculating the beginning of pregnancy, only about 2-3% that actually post maturity.

Postmature infant risk

As well as premature infants, postmature infant has the potential problems that could be harmful to the health and survival.

After passing through the 42 weeks of pregnancy, the placenta usually has shrunk so that fewer nutrients and oxygen are channeled to the baby. Babies are growing also makes amniotic fluid decreases. When this happens, the cord can be pinched when the baby moves or the uterus. It can also interfere with the supply of nutrients and oxygen to the baby. As compensation, the baby began to use its own fat and carbohydrates to provide energy.

Growth rate becomes slow and sometimes weight may even decline. Postmature infants prone to develop low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) because they have run out of stored fat and carbohydrates.

Potential problems in infants post maturity, among others:

1. dismaturitas syndrome (syndrome dysmaturity)
Babies have the characteristics of placental insufficiency as dry skin, peeling, wrinkles, nails and long hair and body look thinner because of malnutrition.

2. meconium aspiration syndrome
baby out stool (meconium) into the amniotic fluid and then inhale it into the lungs, it can cause breathing difficulties and the baby at risk of developing complications such as lung infections and persistent hypertension polmunar.

3. Macrosomia
baby grows too large so it is more difficult for a normal birth through the birth canal. This condition occurs when the placenta is still functioning properly even though it was past the 42 weeks.

4. Birth of death
baby died in the womb.

Factors causing the baby is born too late:

  • There is a history of late-born in a family or in a previous pregnancy.
  • The baby sex male
  • Pregnancy is a history of the first child
  • Excessive maternal weight or overweight.
  • Errors of estimation calculation of gestational age, which usually occurs because the last menstrual period is not known with certainty.

To reduce anxiety, control remains to be done. Mainly because pregnant mothers will experience more physical fatigue. Awareness of the risk of pre-eclampsia also should still be maintained. If indeed there is a family history of the birth of late, not then mean the couple can relax their vigilance.

Treatment

If your pregnancy has reached 41-42 weeks, it is very important for you to check the health of your baby. There are several tests that can be performed, which includes physical and fetal monitoring with Doppler or ultrasound. If the inspection shows that the baby is active and healthy and normal amniotic fluid volume, the doctor or midwife may decide to continue monitoring on a regular basis until your labor starts naturally. If the results showed that the baby might be problematic, there is a choice whether to induce labor so soon begin or perform a cesarean.

Most babies are born postmature have a healthy condition without complications. In infants are deprived of oxygen, resuscitation may be required. If meconium is present in the amniotic fluid and neonatal lethargy, a tube is passed into the windpipe (trachea) to suck meconium that might inhibit the respiratory tract. If meconium has been entered into the lungs, the ventilator may be required to support breathing. Giving glucose solution through a vein (intravenous) is often necessary to prevent hypoglycemia.
